If you desire a perennial that will extend the season of your garden and you have a shady site, then Helleborus or ‘Lenten Rose’ is the plant for you. With varieties that start blooming in late winter to early spring and produce flowers up to 6 weeks long, Helleborus is truly a gem to add to your garden. Helleborus will typically grow 18-24″ in height and will produce clump-forming plants that have blooms that are cup-shaped, nodding and resemble roses. They come in single and double-flowered varieties in a multitude of colors, even near-black! Planted in full to part shade, Lenten Roses prefer rich, moist soil, but can tolerate short periods of drought and other soil conditions. *Please Note that Helleborus plants are poisonous. Deer and rabbits know to avoid them.
