The Camellia is a medium to large flowering evergreen shrub with striking dark glossy leaves with single to double blooms, depending on the variety, that open during the fall and early winter season in zones 7-9. This is a time when most gardens are lacking in color, so adding the Camellia will bring interest and beauty to the landscape and extend the garden’s interest. Camellias come from the eastern and southern regions of Asia and were introduced to America through the port of Charleston by famed French Botanist Andre Michaux. This favorite shrub prefers moist, acidic, well-draining soil and likes part shade to dappled sun. Any pruning should be done after blooming in early spring. Camellia make a wonderful addition to any landscape border as a focal point or planted as an evergreen hedge.
