Collection: Betony (Stachys) Perennials
Betony is a clump-forming perennial stachys that gardeners are discovering as a standout alternative to ordinary border plants. Its botanical name is stachys, and the Hummelo varieties earn special attention for their showy, salvia-like flower spikes. These rise about 12 inches above the foliage in late spring to early summer. The glossy, dark green leaves form a dense, tidy mound 9 to 12 inches high. Over time it spreads into a handsome ground cover.
Betony grows best in average, well-drained soil in full sun, and it shows good drought tolerance once established. In hot, humid climates, a little afternoon shade helps it stay looking its best. Because it forms dense clumps that suppress weeds and spreads gradually, it makes an excellent choice for edging and border filling. It also works beautifully as a low-maintenance ground cover.
