Coleus - Annuals

Coleus (Plectranthus) has been in gardens since the 1800s and offers dramatically varying foliage colors. Depending on the variety chosen, coleus can be planted in the shade or sun and look great in the landscape or in containers as thrillers, fillers, and/or spillers. Grown mostly for their striking foliage, pair with other annuals for stunning combination creations. If you see a flower blooming on your coleus plant, feel free to trim it off for a continued fabulous show of foliage.

Choosing Coleus for Sun, Shade, and Containers

Coleus is a versatile choice for adding bold color and texture without relying on flowers. Depending on the variety, foliage may feature shades of green, burgundy, red, pink, yellow, or combinations of several colors. Use coleus in garden beds to brighten shaded spaces, or mix sun-tolerant varieties into sunny borders and patio containers for season-long impact.

When planting coleus in containers, combine upright varieties with trailing or mounding annuals to create layered arrangements. Keep soil evenly moist but well-drained, and check the light requirements of each variety before planting. Pinching or trimming plants as needed can help maintain a fuller shape, while removing flower spikes keeps the focus on the colorful foliage.
