Collection: Beardtongue (Penstemon) Perennials

Penstemon is a native prairie perennial that hummingbirds and butterflies simply can't resist. It brings tall, colorful flower spikes to the garden from early to midsummer. Gardeners know it by another name too: beardtongue. You'll find varieties growing from 1 to 3 feet tall. Flower colors include pink, blue, red, purple, and white. Because it tolerates dry soil and thrives in hot, sunny locations, it fits naturally into low-maintenance and water-wise landscapes.

Beardtongue grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and needs very little fussing once established. The long-lasting blooms also make it an excellent cut flower. Give it plenty of space though — it doesn't like competition from neighboring plants. Penstemon performs best when it has room to spread.
