- Dark Foliage,
- Adds Vertical Motion,
- Native
Description
(Big Blue Stem Grass) Add vertical interest to your late summer garden with the beautiful color and texture of Andropogon ‘Blackhawks’ grass. Standing up to 5 feet tall and spreading to 2 feet wide, this columnar grass is hardy in zones 3-9. In the spring the foliage emerges dark green to purple shades and as the summer progresses, turns to a deep purple-black color. If you love ‘Indian Warrior’ but are looking for something a bit shorter, Andropogon ‘Blackhawks’ may be just right for you standing a foot shorter. This native grass likes to be grown in full sun locations and is pretty adaptable to any soil condition once established. In late summer wispy black seed heads appear. Plant as a border, in mass, or as a specimen and watch as it adds motion to your garden.
