The deep red wine-colored flowers appear in early summer here in Michigan and continue to bloom long into summer. Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ is hardy in zones 5-9 and likes to be grown in full to part sun locations. This deer-resistant, fragrant flowering shrub is a real beauty. Fragrance depends on the age of the flowers, the time of day, and the weather. The scent has been described as a combination of pineapple, banana, and strawberries, some even notice scents of bubblegum. While some may notice the scent others may not. Beautiful Blooms. For some strange reason, this year there is no fragrance. I gave one plant to my sister-in-law years ago. We live 50 miles apart. She noticed that hers also has no fragrance this year. Is there anything that we can do to bring the fragrance back ???
