- Full, Bright Blooms,
- Mid Summer Flower Color
Description
Astilbe 'Dragon's Lair' (False Spirea) Add dramatic foliage and feathery flowers to part shade garden spaces with Astilbe 'Dragon's Lair'. This striking perennial stands out with its richly colored, glossy, dark foliage that creates interest long before the flowers appear. In summer, tall stems rise above the leafy mound carrying airy plumes of rosy-purple flowers, creating a beautiful combination of color and texture.
Reaching approximately 26 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, this Astilbe has a nicely mounded habit that works beautifully in shade gardens, woodland-inspired plantings, and mixed perennial beds. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, 'Dragon's Lair' can grow in full sun, part shade, or full shade. For best performance, provide rich soil with consistent moisture, especially when planted in locations receiving more sunlight. Astilbes generally flower best when they receive some sunlight rather than deep shade.
Blooming in mid-summer, the colorful plumes provide seasonal interest while attracting bees to the garden. Astilbes are also considered deer and rabbit resistant, making them especially useful where browsing is a concern.
The feathery blooms of Astilbe 'Dragon's Lair' are also well suited for cutting and can add soft texture to fresh flower arrangements. With its combination of dark foliage, colorful summer flowers, and excellent shade tolerance, this perennial brings something special to areas of the garden that could use a little extra color. Astilbe 'Dragon's Lair' is part of the Proven Winners® perennial collection.
