Description

(Bleeding Heart) Dicentra 'Gold Heart' is a stunning gold-leaved form of the old-time favorite common bleeding heart! Arching peach-colored stems carry chains of deep pink and white heart-shaped flowers above the dramatic gold leaves. Hummingbirds are attracted to the graceful blooms, yet deer keep their distance. The fern-like foliage appears early in the spring and provides a colorful focal point in the shade garden. 'Gold Heart' will grow up to 2 feet high and up to 3 feet wide. Hardy for zones 3 to 9, plant in full to part shade. Like other Dicentra spectabilis, 'Gold Heart' will go dormant during the heat of the summer. We recommend planting near hostas or ferns that will fill in the area after the Dicentra foliage dies back.

Heidi There is nothing better than the bright lime green foliage that is the first to appear in my spring garden. Before anything else is even close to blooming, Gold Heart is standing tall and the beautiful strands of Bleeding Hearts are dangling for all to see.

Favorite Plant

By far our favorite plant in the garden! I have 4 of these on the north side of our home. They receive just a couple hours of early sun each day. The first 2 were planted straight into clay soil, and have flourished for over 5 years. The second 2 were placed in soil amended with compost and manure, and they flourish equal to the others. They BRIGHTEN the shade and have abundant lovely pink hearts on nearly every branch. When the first blooms decline, I cut them back by half and they fluff right back up and occasionally rebloom. They seem to have no problems with disease or critters. Weather damage repairs itself the following year. Photographs beautifully!
