Description

(Weigela) It's time to light up the night with Midnight Wine Shine® Weigela! This improved version of Midnight Wine® boasts darker and strikingly glossy foliage with greater hardiness from zones 4-8. This provides better resistance to tip dieback during the winter months. Although it flowers better than Midnight Wine®, this plant is typically grown for its attractive dark foliage and dwarf size. Growing a tidy 1-1½' high by 2-2½' wide, Midnight Wine Shine® can be used as an accent plant for the front of the border or as a striking mass-planted edging. Consider using Midnight Wine Shine® as a replacement for Berberis (Barberry) where it is banned or as a thorn free substitute. The bright pink spring blooms will attract Hummingbirds, but deer find them unappealing! Midnight Wine Shine® Weigela is best grown in full sun with average moisture and well-draining soil. Blooming on old wood, any pruning may be done after flowering, although with its compact habit, it should not require shaping. Midnight Wine Shine® Weigela is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub.

I planted two in 2021. They are great, very unfussy, low-growing plants (exactly as described) with beautiful foliage. They are in a full sun location in zone 6a. They ask very little of me and are beautiful.
