Description

(Japanese Iris) Soft and elegant is how one might describe 'Pinkerton' Iris and its presence in the garden. This japanese iris features pale pink blooms with ruffled edges and a yellow stripe at the base of each petal. Each bloom can be as wide as 7 inches in size, and are great for attracting hummingbirds and bees. Japanese iris are later to bloom than Siberian iris', and will bloom in the early summer. Long foliage blades and sturdy green stems accompany the flowers on this plant. Growing to a maximum height of 36 inches and a maximum width of 24-28 inches, it makes a great garden border. Also try planting it as a mass planting in the garden for vertical color, or on its own as a focal point. 'Pinkerton' Iris is hardy in zones 4-9, and grows best in full sun to part shade locations. It requires consistent watering and is also great for planting beside water sources such as streams or ponds. The key is to not let the soil surrounding the plant dry out. It is recommended NOT to fertilize when the iris is newly planted. Instead, fertilize the soil a month or two prior to planting, and once the plant is established, they can be fertilized after they bloom or beforehand in the spring.
