Description

(Switch Grass) Panicum PRAIRIE WINDS® 'Blue Spear' is a striking switch grass valued for its strong vertical form and cool blue-green foliage. Standing 48-52inches tall and up to 30 inches wide, this columnar clump-forming native grass emerges with steely blue-green leaves that create a clean, upright silhouette early in the season. As summer progresses, fused flower panicles appear above the foliage, adding soft texture and movement that continues into fall and winter for extended seasonal interest. It is hardy in zones 4–9, making it a reliable performer across a wide range of climates.

'Blue Spear' thrives in full sun, where its upright habit and foliage color are at their best. It prefers average to dry, well-drained soil and is highly tolerant of heat, humidity, and drought once established. As a native switch grass, it is generally deer and rabbit resistant, contributing to its low-maintenance nature.

In garden design, PRAIRIE WINDS® 'Blue Spear' works beautifully in perennial borders, prairie-style plantings, and mixed beds. Its narrow, upright form makes it ideal for adding height, structure, and contrast, especially when paired with colorful flowering perennials or used in mass plantings for a bold, modern look. Panicum PRAIRIE WINDS® 'Blue Spear' is a Proven Winners® Perennial.
