Sweet Autumn Clematis

(Clematis) Clematis ‘Terniflora’, also known as ‘Sweet Autumn’, produces masses of small 1 inch creamy white flowers completely covering this plant from August through September. Its sweet scent is an added bonus, and is sure to get the attention of anyone who walks near. Its scent also attracts pollinators including hummingbirds and butterflies. ‘Sweet Autumn’ is a very impressive, vigorous grower. It is hardy in zones 4-9, and grows to be about 10-20 feet tall. It thrives when grown in moderate to moist soil, and it will quickly establish itself in the landscape. Unlike most clematis, ‘Sweet Autumn’ will thrive and bloom well in part shade. Its roots, also, like to be kept well shaded and cool. Mulch, ground cover plants, and companion perennials are all great ideas for helping to keep its roots well shaded. ‘Sweet Autumn’ is a part of prune Group 3, and can be kept smaller with pruning. It should be cut back in late fall, as ‘Sweet Autumn’ blooms on new wood. We recommend cleaning it up in the early spring by removing any dead or weak stems, this will ensure it thrives in the season ahead.
