Description
Keep deer and rabbits out of the picture without giving up a full season of color. 'Cat's Pajamas' Nepeta leads off in late spring with fragrant spikes of indigo-blue flowers that bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds flock to. Shear it back when the first flush fades and it will rebloom right through fall. 'Bobblehead' Allium takes the stage in midsummer with pale lilac, ball-shaped blooms that age into striking spherical seedheads. 'Dark Side of the Moon' Astilbe layers in dark, chocolate-burgundy foliage all season long, capped by rosy-purple plumes in late summer. Rock 'N Grow® 'Midnight Velvet' Sedum rounds things out with rich purple foliage from spring onward, then rose-red flowers from late summer into fall that hold their good looks right through winter.
Built for full sun and hardy in zones 4-8, this deer- and rabbit-resistant combination is easy to grow and keeps color coming from spring all the way to frost. Give the Astilbe a little extra water during dry spells. It's more drought-tolerant than most astilbes, but still appreciates consistent moisture.
